Lower Back Pain Q & A

What is lower back pain?

Lower back pain occurs in the space below your ribs and above your legs. As many as 80% of people experience low back pain at some point in their lifetime.

Pain in your lower back may involve the vertebrae (L1-L5), intervertebral discs, tendons and ligaments, or spinal cord and spinal cord nerves. Lower back pain can also affect your blood vessels and muscles.

What causes low back pain?

The most common causes of acute pain involve trauma from a sports injury, car accident, or reaching and twisting. Many people also experience low back pain after lifting heavy objects with improper technique.

Chronic low back pain is often associated with overuse, misuse, and degenerative conditions like arthritis, spinal stenosis, and osteoporosis. In some cases, other health disorders like fibromyalgia or kidney stones can lead to low back pain. Less frequently, low back pain can be due to diseases like Paget’s, scoliosis, infections, inflammation, or tumors.

How is low back pain diagnosed?

Dr. Roofian reviews your personal and family medical history, discusses your pain, and performs a physical examination to reach an accurate diagnosis. In some cases, he may recommend additional tests, such as:

  • X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs: to identify anatomic abnormalities
  • Specialized studies: such as discography, which involves injections to evaluate back pain
  • Nerve conduction (NCV) or evoked potential (EP): to evaluate nerve function
  • Electromyography (EMG): to measure electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles

Dr. Roofian offers various nonsurgical treatments, including:
