PRP and Stem Cell Therapy Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an innovative regenerative therapy that leverages the growth factors in your blood to heal your body.

Your blood is made up of a liquid called plasma, platelets, and red and white cells. While platelets are known for their clotting abilities, they’re also full of growth factor proteins that aid in healing injuries.

PRP is plasma with a platelet count that’s 5-10 times greater than the average. This therapy is prepared by drawing your blood, separating the platelets using a centrifuge, and concentrating them in the plasma.

How is PRP used?

Dr. Roofian uses PRP to prompt healing in two different ways: it can be injected directly into an injured area with an anesthetic to ease pain, or it can be used in conjunction with surgery to encourage faster recovery.

PRP’s effectiveness depends on the treatment area and whether the injury is chronic or acute. Many conditions respond well to PRP treatment, including:

  • Muscle and ligament injuries
  • Arthritis of the hip and knee
  • Chronic tendon injuries

Dr. Roofian recommends PRP in surgeries to help increase healing times with ACL tears and torn rotator cuffs.

There are few risks or side effects associated with PRP therapy. In most cases, they’re similar to those seen from cortisone injections and trigger point therapy.

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy is another regenerative treatment that replaces damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells.

Dr. Roofian administers stem cell therapy through a bone marrow transport. Your bone marrow is the soft, fatty tissue inside your bones, and stem cells are the immature cells within your bone marrow that create blood cells.

A stem cell injection is often similar to a blood transfusion and uses a tube called a central venous catheter.

How is stem cell therapy used?

Bone marrow is responsible for growth, wound healing, and replacing cells lost through disease or degeneration. Because of these therapeutic properties, stem cell injections treat various conditions from leukemia and lymphoma to orthopedic conditions.

Stem cell therapy might also be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Hair loss
  • Blindness
  • Heart disease
  • Brain and spinal cord injuries
  • Neurological problems like Alzheimer’s disease
