Herniated Disk Q & A

What is a herniated disc?

Your spine is made up of 24 vertebrae that are separated by cushiony discs. These discs function as shock absorbers for your spine and keep it flexible. When a disc is damaged, it can bulge or break open in a condition known as a herniated, slipped, or ruptured disc.

Herniated discs can develop anywhere in your spine, but are most common in the lumbar (lower) spine and the cervical (neck) spine.

What causes a herniated disc?

Age or injury typically cause herniated discs. As you age, your discs wear out and lose flexibility, which leaves them vulnerable to damage. Injury can also occur to your vertebral discs from physical movements like bending and twisting.

These movements can cause the outer layer of your disc to crack, allowing the inside to bulge out. When a bulging disc puts pressure on a nerve, it can lead to various uncomfortable symptoms.

What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

It’s possible to have a herniated disc without experiencing any symptoms. At other times, you might only have a slight backache. When a herniated disc presses on nerve roots, you may experience pain, weakness, and numbness along the nerve.

A herniated disc in your lower spine might create weakness in your leg muscles or cause pain that radiates down your leg and into your foot. Herniated discs in your neck may result in pain, weakness, and numbness in the upper arms, shoulders, hands, and fingers.

Usually, certain movements like coughing or sneezing increase herniated disc pain regardless of its location.

How are herniated discs treated?

To diagnose a herniated disc, Dr. Roofian performs a physical exam and evaluates your symptoms. In some cases, he may recommend a digital imaging scan to rule out underlying conditions.

For symptoms that don’t improve within a month, Dr. Roofian might recommend spinal decompression, which involves stretching the spine.

To support your recovery, Dr. Roofian typically recommends a combination of treatments, including:

  • Rest
  • Hot and cold compresses
  • Light exercise to strengthen muscles

He also provides information on regular exercise and ergonomics to protect your back while lifting to reduce your risk of disc herniation in the future.
